Performance, 2010, LAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq

On 25 September 2010, for the reopening of the LAM, the Czech artist Jiri Kovanda was invited to perform. A hole was dug for the occasion in one of the walls of the exhibition Inhabiting the world poetically. Entering the last room, you could see an outstretched arm, the artist’s, reaching out of this hole and offering visitors a red sweet.

As part of the Machine à écrire workshop, Mathieu Arbez, Gaëlle Le Floch and Élodie Merland responded, performatively, to Jiri Kovanda. On 31 October 2010, around 5 pm, like three visitors, we stood in front of this hole, on the side of the outstretched hand, waiting for the artist’s return, or more precisely for his hand offering one (or three) sweet(s). For over an hour we stared at this hole, almost motionless and without a word.

« Please, the museum is closing » was the trigger here, no one having offered us anything.
